ArnallPatz Arnall Patz of the Wilmer Institute at Johns Hopkins elucidated the link between life-saving oxygen therapy and blinding "retrolental fibroplasia." This led to a better understanding of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), aguably a blinding pediatric disease of societal magnitude rivalling amblyopia. Following Dr. Patz' findings, neonatologists now SCREEN for ROP by infant gestational age and birthweight allowing ophthalmologists to stage pre-threshold disease leading to effective treatment that can reduce the prevalence and severity of the disease. Dr. Patz died March 11, 2010. His nephew, Aharon Sternberg, is an outstanding optometrist in Alaska. laurels
